Aperture Card Size Guide: Card & Window Measurements

One of the most common questions we are asked about our aperture cards is: “How big is the aperture?”

This guide shows the aperture dimensions of our cards so you can quickly find the right size for cross stitch, embroidery, photographs, pressed flowers, artwork and other craft projects.

Aperture Card Size Guide

Use the guide below to compare our card sizes, aperture shapes and the actual dimensions of the opening. All measurements are shown in millimetres.

Important: The aperture measurement is the size of the visible opening. Your artwork should be larger than this so that its edges sit behind the card.

What Size Should My Artwork Be?

Your artwork should be larger than the aperture. This allows the edges of your work to sit behind the card where they can be positioned and secured without being visible from the front.

A Simple Example

If you choose a Small Square card with an 89 × 89mm aperture, your finished piece must be larger than 89 × 89mm. The central 89 × 89mm area will be visible through the opening, while the outside edges remain hidden behind the card.

What Can You Put in an Aperture Card?

Aperture cards create a simple frame around your work and can be used with many different crafts.

Cross Stitch

Display small stitched designs while neatly hiding the edges of the fabric behind the card.

Embroidery

Turn small embroidered pieces into finished handmade greetings cards and keepsakes.

Pressed Flowers

Frame pressed flowers and botanical arrangements within the aperture.

Photographs

Use the aperture as a simple frame around a photograph or printed image.

Prints & Artwork

Display lino prints, drawings, paintings and other small pieces of artwork.

Paper Crafts

Use patterned paper, die-cuts, paper cutting and other decorative techniques behind the opening.

Aperture Card FAQs

Is the aperture size the same as the card size?

No. The card size is the overall size of the folded card. The aperture measurement refers only to the opening cut into the front.

Should my artwork be the same size as the aperture?

No. Your artwork should be slightly larger than the aperture so that its edges overlap behind the card and can be secured in position.

What does a 90mm round aperture mean?

It means the circular opening measures approximately 90mm across its widest point, or 90mm in diameter.

Can I use aperture cards for cross stitch?

Yes. Aperture cards are particularly useful for displaying small cross stitch and embroidery designs because the opening frames the design while the surrounding card hides the edges of the fabric.

How do I know which aperture size I need?

Measure the part of your design that you want to remain visible. Choose an aperture that fits within the finished piece while leaving enough material around the outside to secure it behind the card.
